Floriana coach Michael Woods tendered his resignation yesterday, a day after the Greens slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Birkirkara in their opening Championship Pool match.

Wednesday’s loss left Floriana without a win in their last five matches.

Contacted by The Times, Woods said differences with the club’s committee led to his decision to step down.

“I am very disappointed that I’ve ended my relationship with Floriana FC,” Woods said.

“However, the situation had become unbearable. Unfortunately there were some issues with the club committee regarding technical decisions I’ve made in the past few weeks, differences that could not be resolved.”

Woods had been in charge of Floriana for almost a year after taking over from Todor Raykov. Last season, the former St George’s coach led the Greens to their first piece of silverware for several years after they won the FA Trophy, beating rivals Valletta 1-0 in the final.

Apart from Woods, goalkeepers coach Roger Camilleri, team manager Anthony Grech Sant and Peter Agius, the assistant team manager, are also understood to have left their posts.

Floriana, currently joint third with Birkirkara on 21 points, face Hibernians at the National Stadium tomorrow.
