The Mepa Board this morning granted a development permit for the restoration of part of Fort St Elmo overlooking the entrance to Grand Harbour.
The project will form part of a larger project covering the whole area of Fort St Elmo.
This part of the project entails the restoration of the Carafa enceinte including the structures within this area, and reuse as part of a museum complex and heritage route.
An existing building at the entrance to the fort (opposite the Sacra Infermeria/conference centre ) will be used as an orientation room and another structure will host the National War Museum Association.
There will be a tourist information office at the gate, leading from the Carafa enceinte. Other structures will be adapted as an extension to the
Military History Museum and an enclosed area is earmarked for a museum on the British blockade of Malta during the French occupation.
There will be a catering outlet in two of the open casemates.
A raised walkway is proposed along St Gregory's Curtain. This will form part of a walk along the ramparts having a total length of over 600 metres. This raised walkway will provide views of the Fort on the landward side and views of the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour on the outward.
