Branislav Ivanovic scored a dramatic extra-time winner as Chelsea completed a remarkable comeback to beat Napoli 4-1 and advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League last night.

In Spain, Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid eased through, a 4-1 win over CSKA Moscow giving Jose Mourinho’s men a 5-2 aggregate victory.

Ivanovic swept home emphatically in the 105th minute to give Chelsea – beaten 3-1 in the first leg in Naples last month – a 5-4 aggregate victory at Stamford Bridge.

It was only the fourth time in the modern history of the Champions League that a team has successfully overturned a two-goal first-leg deficit at this stage.

The match had gone to extra-time after a pulsating period of 90 minutes which saw Chelsea battle to a 3-1 lead that left the tie locked at 4-4 overall.

Chelsea had surged into a 2-0 lead that would have been good enough to take them through following a first half Didier Drogba goal and a John Terry header just after the interval.

But Gokhan Inler lashed home a 55th-minute thunderbolt to make it 2-1 on the night and 4-3 to Napoli on aggregate to leave the Italians in the driving seat.

Yet with a little over a quarter of an hour to go substitute Andrea Dossena was adjudged to have handled Ivanovic’s header in the area and German referee Felix Brych pointed to the spot.

Frank Lampard duly stepped up to drive home the penalty to make it 3-1 as the contest went to extra-time.

At the Bernabeu, Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema were also on target as Real joined Barcelona in the last eight, the draw for which will be held tomorrow.

Mourinho decided against bringing in fit again Frenchman Benzema from the start, preferring instead to pair Higuain with Ronaldo.

Real’s quick passing increased in intensity and it was no surprise when Sami Khedira and Kaka combined on 26 minutes to provide an easy finish for Higuain.

Zoran Tosic, for CSKA, and Xabi Alonso, for the Spaniards, wasted good chances from dead ball situations before Ahmed Musa produced a stinging shot that Iker Casillas had to turn over the bar.

On 55 minutes, Ronaldo tried his luck with a spinning shot from a full 40 yards that Sergei Chepchugov failed to block. A wicked bounce may have confused the keeper who could only watch as the ball squeezed past him into the net.

Mourinho then changed Higuain for Benzema and the Frenchman grabbed Madrid’s third within a minute of his arrival, converting a Mesut Ozil pass on the second attempt for his fifth goal of this season’s Champions League.

Tosic gave the travelling Russian support, numbering around 3,000 fans, something to shout about on 77 minutes with a stunning left-footed strike from the edge of the area that struck the underside of the bar before beating Casillas.

But there was still time for Ronaldo to add his second in injury-time as Real marched on.
