Congratulations to Joe Borg (Exhibition On Dickens, March 7) on SKS’s publication of the translation of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities and their exhibition to launch the publication.
Mr Borg is perhaps unaware that the British Council in Malta is also marking the bicentenary of Charles Dickens with an extensive programme of activities.
A film festival – What the Dickens! – opened on January 25 at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Valletta with A Tale of Two Cities (1958). Over the course of the year, six classic Dickens’ films will be screened. The next screening (Oliver, 1968) will be on Saturday. Admission is free and everyone is invited to attend.
On February 7, Malta participated in the British Council’s global read-a-thon to celebrate Dickens’ 200th birthday. This global event involved 24 countries reading 24 of Dickens’ texts in 24 hours. The highlights of these readings can be seen at: http://vimeo.com/36316658 .
On February 28, the British Council, in collaboration with Heritage Malta, presented a special event at the Maritime Museum exploring the Dickens-Malta connection. An article about the British Council’s Dickens programme was published in The Times on January 22.
The British Council’s website (www.britishcouncil.org/malta) contains much more information about all the upcoming Dickens-related activities in Malta. There is also more information on the British Council’s global Dickens 2012 programme at www.dickens2012.org.
