The racing winds that battered these islands over the past few days are a clear indication of the energy that can be tapped from this natural resource.

...if we all do our part to use alternative sources of energy it will pay us back in time by living healthier lives

Mechanical engineer Brian Bugeja has, for the past two years, been fine-tuning a wind turbine to reap wind energy to use on a parcel of land he has close to Wied Babu, in Żurrieq.

The turbine produces 1.5 kilowatts of electricity and, on a particularly windy day, can generate three kilowatts.

“I have managed to cut down my electricity bill by half since I installed the turbine. The power produced by the turbine is stored in several batteries,” Mr Bugeja explained.

All the electrical connections were done by Josie Bugelli. Mr Bugeja, who is also into organic farming, was overjoyed the other day when he hatched quails and chicks in an incubator that is also fed by the turbine.

“Living so close to nature makes you understand even more how important it is to make all the effort to curb pollution as much as you can.

Turbines produce clean energy because they do away with the use of fossil fuels. “I believe that a lot of illnesses are caused by harmful emissions from fossil fuels. So, if we all do our part to use alternative sources of energy it will pay us back in time by living healthier lives,” Mr Bugeja said.

Houses in the countryside and others that are detached can make use of turbines.

“Ideally, one ought to install solar panels to make the best of both worlds,” Mr Bugeja suggests.
