A 19-year-man from Swieqi was today jailed for two months and fined €500 after being convicted of having kicked a woman police sergeant and insulted her and a police inspector. The man, who was a minor when the crime was committed, was also found guilty of relapsing.

The court was told that Police Inspector Anne Marie Micallef and WPS Maria Scicluna were on patrol in Sliema when they observed Mr Camilleri and his friends making obscene gestures at them. When the officers walked over to them they faced a barrage of insults.

Some 30 minutes later the officers saw a fight which involved a group of men including Mr Camilleri.

Mr Camilleri was arrested and while he continued to insult the officers, he lashed out twice at the sergeant and managed to kick her in the leg in the police van.

Mr Camilleri has filed an appeal.
