Obinna Obiefule’s exploits in the BOV Premier League are improving his chances of moving abroad next season as a host of clubs are already eyeing the Nigerian striker.
Sources told The Sunday Times that clubs in Turkey, Germany and Norway have made preliminary enquiries about Obiefule while a team from Kazakhstan wanted to sign him last month but the Blues rejected their overtures.
Obiefule began the season with Marsaxlokk but the club’s financial troubles led to his exit in November.
In January, Obiefule decided to continue his Premier League stint with Mosta.
After hitting 10 goals in the short time he spent with Marsaxlokk, Obiefule made an instant impact for the Blues, scoring eight times in the league to establish himself as one of the leading marksmen.
The 24-year-old, who played for Sliema Wanderers last season, had been expected to sign for Norwegian outfit Sandnes Ulf last summer but the deal reportedly fell through at the last minute.
It is believed that Sandnes Ulf have already indicated their intention to offer Obiefule a deal at the end of the season.
In comments he gave to football website allnigeria soccer.com last month, Obie-fule expressed his desire to further his career away from Malta at the end of the season.
“The word ‘non-transferable’ does not exist anymore in world soccer,” Obiefule was quoted as saying.
“It is time to move on after spending three seasons playing in Malta.
“I am having one of my best seasons as a professional foot-baller. Definitely, some clubs are following my progress in the Maltese championship.”
Brother’s footsteps
Obiefule is also known to be very keen on emulating his older brother Paul who has already played 14 times for the Nigerian national team.
Paul Obiefule, 25, is currently on the books of Finnish club KuPs.
It is believed that a member of the Nigeria FA’s technical staff has told people close to Obiefule that they are also monitoring his progress.
