We would like to respond to the letter by Elaine Tanti (Escape Of Dog, March 6).

All the staff at Dogs Trust Malta are passionate about animal welfare and have been deeply saddened by this tragic accident. The team searched every day for Bruce immediately after he went missing. All of the shelters, clinics and the animal welfare department were alerted, a press appeal was issued, missing posters displayed and the charity was in communication with construction workers, company workers and passersby.

Dogs Trust staff members were in touch with the owners every day while searching for Bruce and have visited the family to offer solace and support. This type of incident has never happened before and could not have been predicted. However, we would like to reassure the public that we take animal welfare very seriously and operate to the highest standards. Our staff are working hard to improve the lives of dogs in Malta by offering free microchipping and neutering through the charity’s own funding and have dealt with over 8,000 dogs since 2009.

We sincerely hope that this tragic accident will not deter dog owners from coming to us in the future.
