What are the key issues for the SPED?
Planning for the sustainable management of our land and sea (2)
The formulation of the strategic objectives has identified four key thematic issues together with their spatial implications. These include the socio-economic development, the environment, climate change and travel patterns. These thematic issues are cross-cutting and affect all sectors of our economy, quality of life and the status of the environment we live in.
The Strategic Plan for Environment and Development, which will replace the 1990 Structure Plan, shall be an enabling plan to increase the competitiveness of the Maltese Islands in a manner where socio-economic development assists the achievement of national environment objectives. As a national strategic document, the SPED is to guide the spatial aspect of the government’s sectoral policies, plans and programmes, including those emerging from the EDPA as well as form the primary basis for decisions on all development and environmental permit applications. Mepa is currently carrying out a public consultation exercise on the government’s strategic objectives for the preparation of the SPED.
