Maltese scientist Andre' Xuereb has been selected to take part in the 61st Lindau Nobel Laureates meeting being held in Germany.

Dr Xuereb is a research fellow of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, as well as a visiting researcher working with Mauro Paternostro and Laura Mazzola at Queen's University Belfast.

His research interest are in optomechanics, laser cooling, quantum optics, retarded atom–surface interactions and dissipative dipole forces

This year's selection was particularly challenging due to the fact that both the quality and the internationality of the nominees were of an unprecedentedly high level.

From several thousand nominations worldwide, only the 550 most qualified Young Researchers are given the opportunity to enrich and share the unique atmosphere of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings.

Justice Minister Chris Said expressed his satisfaction that for the first time Malta will be represented at such an important annual event for the sciences and academia.

"Such an outstanding Maltese researcher will have the opportunity to contribute in this globally recognised forum for the exchange of knowledge between Nobel Laureates and young researchers," he said.

Earlier this year, the Government, the University and the Nobel Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding allowing Malta to participate in the Lindau Nobel Laureates meeting for the next three years.
