The Malta Triathlon Association (MTA) will be organising their first event of the 2012 season on March 17 when the Duathlon Championships are staged at the Coast Road.

The race, held with the support of Birkirkara SJ and Spiteri & Co, gets underway at 2 p.m. and will be raced over the following distances – first run: 5km; cycle: 30km; second run: 3km.

The MTA is expecting a size-able turnout, seeing the growth of the sport in the last years, with familiar faces such as 2011 champions Fabio Spiteri and Danica Bonello Spiteri, Keith Galea, Donatelle Camilleri and Michelle Vella Wood battling it out for the titles and facing competition from the new triathletes coming up.

Vella Wood, fresh from her recent podium finish at the Malta Marathon, the first triathlete to do so, is also returning to the championships after having missed out last year following the birth of her daughter.

On March 17, the Coast Road will be closed for traffic between 2 and 5 p.m.
