The remit of the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality is to be extended to include religion, sexual orientation and age, Justice Minister Chris Said said today. The commission's remit is currently limited to discrimination on the basis of gender and race.

Dr Said said that the government wanted to discourage discrimination in all its forms and at all levels.

Speaking on the occasion of International Women's Day during a tour of the commission's offices, Dr Said noted that a fifth of candidates for this Saturday's local council elections were women. This was good, he said, but it showed that more needed to be done for more women to be involved in decision-making positions.

He said the Bill to widen the remit of the commission had been approved by the Cabinet and would be moved in Parliament shortly.
