Congratulations for the editorial Please, Can We Have Some More? (February 18) appealing for a proper celebration in Malta of the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth. He has always been one of Malta’s favourite authors.

At the publishing house SKS we anticipated The TImes appeal, with which we wholeheartedly agree. A Tale of Two Cities is shortly being published as our contribution to the bicentenary, in a new edition of the Maltese language version Ġrajja ta’ Żewġt Ibliet prepared by the well-loved poet Karmenu Vassallo more than 60 years ago.

SKS is also holding an exhibition to launch this publication, featuring Charles Dickens’ memorabilia. One highlight of the exhibition will be an authentic and original display of a Charles Dickens signature at the end of the first edition of Hard Times, published in 1863. Other exhibits include older editions of Dickens’ novels as well as Mr Vassallo’s original handwritten text of Ġrajja ta’ Żewġt Ibliet. This exhibition will be held between March 13 and 18 at the foyer of the Ċentru Nazzjonali Laburista, Ħamrun.
