These were three precious points won by Sta Venera at the expense of fellow relegation strugglers Attard with all goals coming in the last nine minutes of the match.

Attard scored first but the Saints turned the tide in their favour to move to the 20-point mark in the standings as Attard stay second-bottom with 15.

The first period was uneventful, with very few scoring opportunities at either end of the pitch. Attard, however, looked the better side but failed to convert the few chances that came their way into goals.

The only action worthy of note in the opening 45 minutes came when a powerful Micallef shot from outside the area was saved in style by the Attard goalkeeper.

Attard went close to scoring as the second half got underway but Filipov’s overhead kick went slightly high over the bar. Five minutes later, Attard were at it again, this time Zahra’s effort also went inches wide.

Substitute Dimcho Traykov then had the better of the Saints defence and tried his luck from outside the area but his effort skimmed the woodwork.

Traykov was not to be denied though as on 81 minutes he opened the score from a free-kick.

But Attard’s joy did not last long as a minute later Daniel Gauci gave away a penalty and got sent off for a second booking. Dylan Mercieca equalised from the spot.

The Saints pressed hard for the winner which they got one minute from time when Karl Cilia tapped the ball home from a corner, sealing a dramatic win for his side.
