A couple was lucky to escape injury this morning when part of the ceiling of their house collapsed.

The incident happened as Malta was hit by a severe thunderstorm at about 5.15 a.m.

A number of flagstones forming the roof of a house in High Street, Birkirkara, caved in, but the couple managed to get out of the way in time.

The thunderstorm caused flooding in various streets, such as Balzan Valley (picture).

The Civil Protection Department assisted a number of drivers whose cars stalled in Valley Road, Msida. It warned motorists to stay away from flood prone areas.

The police also asked motorists to avoid low lying areas in Msida, Marsa, Tal-Barrani and Birkirkara.

Traffic jams were reported at Naxxar Road, Birkirkara Bypass, Burmarrad and tal-Barrani.
