The Benedictine Torch, a symbol of peace, hope and fraternity, was lit yesterday evening by Archbishop Paul Cremona (left) during a ceremony at St John’s Co-Cathedral. Every year, the torch is the main feature of a pilgrimage beginning from the city chosen to light the torch and ending in Monte Cassino (near Rome) at the Shrine of St Benedict. The Benedictine Order this year chose Valletta for this event, which was attended by several dignitaries including European Commission Vice-president Antonio Tajani. On March 14, the torch will be taken to the Vatican to be blessed by Pope Benedict XVI, before arriving at the shrine on March 20.
