France to close Syria embassy
France will close its embassy in Syria to denounce the "scandalous" repression by President Bashar al-Assad's regime, President Nicolas Sarkozy said today at the close of an EU summit.
In Idlib province in the northwest, meanwhile, security forces shot dead a young man at a checkpoint near Maaret al-Numan, the Observatory said.
