Alternattiva Demokratika’s Sliema local council candidate Michael Briguglio said that, if elected, he would hold developers and contractors accountable for their works and ensure the council objects to unsustainable development.
Mr Briguglio was described by AD International Affairs spokesman Arnold Cassola as “honest, experienced and upright”. He is no stranger to Sliema council, having served as an AD councillor between 2003 and 2009.
Citing his role at the forefront of protesting development in Qui-si-Sana, the Chalet and Il-Piazzetta, Mr Briguglio said he had been fighting for residents’ rights since the mid-1990s.
The council’s most recent legislature was an unmitigated disaster, with an incumbent mayor being charged with bribery, councillors faced with criminal charges and several councillors switching party allegiances.
Failure to resolve disagreements among councillors led to the council’s dissolution earlier this month. As a result, on March 10 Sliema residents will elect a new council to serve for the remaining year of this legislature.
An AD spokesman said Sliema residents needed a council that would not bend to “speculators’ attacks”.
