Last month was the third coldest February since records started being kept in 1923, and rainfall was twice the average, the MIA Met Office said today. 

A total of 132.6 mm of rain fell in February at Malta Airport when the monthly average is 61.3mm. The rainiest day was the 21^stwith 24.2mm. The highest rainfall amount for February since 1947 was 187.9mm in 1965.

February was also colder than the climate norm. The mean temperature for February was 10.2^oC which was 2.2^oC lower than the norm of 12.4^oC. This was the third coldest February since 1923.

With a mean maximum temperature of 13^oC and a mean minimum temperature of 7.5^oC both the mean maximum and the mean minimum temperatures were well below the climate norm of 15.5^oC and 9.3^oC.

The highest temperature for this February was 15.9^oC on the 3^rd, while the lowest was 3.6^oC on the 14^th.

The mean wind speed for February was 9.4 knots which is less than the climate norm of 10.3 knots. On the 6^th of the month we had a gust of 50 knots from the Northwest by West direction. The most frequent direction for this month was from the West Northwest direction.

With a mean of 6 hours 36 minutes of bright sunshine, February was 30 minutes more bright than the norm of 6 hours 6 minutes. The dullest day was on the 21^st when there were no hours of bright sunshine while the brightest were on 28^th and 29^th with 10 hours 48minutes.

The relative humidity of 74%, this month was 5% less humid than the climate norm of 79%.

The average sea temperature was 15.4^oC which is 0.7^oC more than the climate norm of 14.7^oC for February.
