The Pietà local council renovated and restored most of the religious niches in the locality. This is most appreciated and commendable as quite a few were in a sorry state due to neglect.

However, once this operation is carried out, conservation and protection from further damage is indispensable.

One of these niches, situated at Guardamangia Hill, corner with Ursuline Sisters Street, was part of the project and although the crucifix was restored and the stonework cleaned, the original glass fronted wooden structure was never replaced.

The result is shown in this photograph.

Wild pigeons are using the precious crucifix as a roost with the resulting coating of droppings on and around it. This, besides being most disrespectful, is ruining and will eventually destroy the work of art that stood there for decades, was restored but left unprotected. The replacement of the glass/wooden structure is urgently recommended as the good work and intentions are backfiring.
