The Performing Arts Festival is a series of events that span 16 days, starting tomorrow with the performance of Filumena Marturano and reaching a climax in the production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore being staged between March 15 and 18.

Filumena Marturano
Talenti are presenting this classic Edouardo De Filippo social comedy at the Manoel Theatre.

Tuesday
Chamber Music for Viola and Piano
An evening of chamber music featuring Gerard Causse’ on the viola and Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro at the piano in works by Hindemith, Beethoven and Franck.

Thursday
Spotlight On – Juliette Bisazza
A vocal recital by participants from Maltese soprano Juliette Bisazza’s masterclasses.

March 10
Spectacle of Dance by Puerto Flamenco
A spectacular evening of Iberian dance by Puerto Flamenco, an eclectic flamenco company from the heart of Seville, employing current trends in authentic flamenco full of unrestrained energy, raw emotion and commanding virtuosity promises an over-whelming response from international audiences and reviewers alike.

March 15-18
Il Trovatore – Giuseppe Verdi
Following the success of last year’s BOV production of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, the opera will once again be conducted by Damiano Binetti with the participation of Kim Kisun and Antonino Interisano alternating as Manrico, Katarina Vovkova and Liana Sass alternating as Eleonora and Svatopluk Sem as the Conte di Luna. Maltese bass Albert Buttigieg will be taking on the role of Ferrando.

Tomorrow
Debutantes’ Concert
Six up-and-coming musicians and singers will, for the first time, take centre stage in a concert with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Under the direction of resident conductor Michael Laus, the debutantes will be presenting an exciting and eclectic programme. At Sir Temi Zammit Hall, University of Malta at 7.30 p.m.

Saturday
Charity concert
The Joy Gospel Singers will be singing at a concert in aid of the St Jeanne Antide Foundation at St Monica School, Fleur-de-Lys at 7.30 p.m. This concert will also feature 60 members of the San Anton School children’s choir.

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday
Masterclass with soprano Juliette Bisazza
Three days of intensive operatic workshops, focusing on vocal technique and role interpretation are being held at the Sala Isouard, Manoel Theatre. The masterclass is free of charge but booking is advisable. Active participation is by live audition.

The chosen participants will showcase their work in a Spotlight Concert as part of the Arts Festival on March 8, accompanied by Sofia Narmania.

Monday
Toi Toi Beethoven
A fantastic mini concert/workshop by viola extraordinaire, Gerard Caussé at Studio Theatre, Manoel Theatre. Both these events are aimed at children aged 8-14. These events start at 5 p.m. and are free. Booking is essential.

Tomorrow and Saturday March 9-11
The Female of the Species
Based on a real incident in the life of Germaine Greer, the iconic feminist academic, this deliciously wicked comedy deftly walks the tightrope between satire and farce, proving the female of the species is not only deadlier, but funnier, than the male. Unifaun is staging the performance at St James Cavalier at 8 p.m. Directed by Chiara Hyzler the cast includes Polly March, Maria Buckle, Laura Best, Anthony Ellul, Edward Mercieca and Chris Galea.
