Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and MP Franco Debono held a meeting last night at Dr Gonzi’s office in Parliament, informed sources said.

The two had not met since a January 22 encounter at Auberge de Castille.

Dr Debono has withdrawn his support for the government, calling repeatedly for urgent institutional and political party reforms to take place.

He abstained in a vote of no confidence on January 26 and no vote has been held in Parliament since.

Yesterday’s meeting came three days after Dr Gonzi was backed by 96.5 per cent of PN councillors to carry on leading the Nationalist Party.

On Sunday, Dr Gonzi said the PN welcomed with open arms all those who wanted to work within it in the interests of the country. He also spoke on the need to put the PN back at the heart of society.

The next day in Parliament, Dr Debono congratulated Dr Gonzi for that speech, saying it recognised the MP’s call for the party to reconnect with the people.
