Joe Smith’s successful book Survivors – a photographic portrayal of the ageing population of Vittoriosa – has been given extensive coverage in the international photographic magazine Black and White Photography.

When the editor of the magazine Elizabeth Roberts saw the book she contacted Mr Smith to set up an interview over Skype and asked for some images in preparation for the feature.

Mr Smith was interviewed by Max Houghton, course leader of MA Photojournalism at Westminster University, who described the project as “a noble commitment that freezes time for a second, preserving it, and a generation of memories, in magnificent monochrome”.

Mr Smith has just published the second reprint of the book and copies are available from Agenda outlets and from the author himself.

The photographer is currently working on the second volume of Survivors with videographer Jean Pierre Gatt.
