I fully agree with Michael Falzon (The Sunday Times, February 12) that on the reverse side of theKartanzjan card it would be appropriate to attach a list of places of interest such as museums, a list of NGOs or information on learning opportunities.

The University of the Third Age (U3E), set up by the Institute of Gerontology at the University of Malta, aims to provide knowledge and impart information.

Moreover, the programmes are specially planned to be intellectually challenging and to promote exchange of knowledge.

By the end of 1997 there were more than 800 registered senior citizens who participated regularly in the educational programmes as well as in the cultural and social activities organised for them.

2012 is European Year for Active Ageing and solidarity between generations. There is a lot to life after 60 – and society is coming increasingly to appreciate the contribution older people can make.

That is what active ageing is about – getting more out of life as you grow older, whether at work, at home or in the community. Kartanzjan qualifies you to join the University of the Third Age and follow educational, cultural and social activities. (To find out more about U3E, visit www.um.edu.mt/eurgeront/u3e)
