Rapist jailed 10 years
A man who raped his 13-year-old nephew and eight-year-old niece over a period of four to five years until 2007 was today jailed 10 years.
The man also abused their five-year-old cousin.
The father of the raped brother and sister filed a police report when his daughter told a friend's mother what happened.
The man was diagnosed with clinical depression and had been admitted to Mount Carmel Mental Hospital in the 1970s. He was sexually abused when he was younger.
His identity and the locations where the sexual acts took place cannot be published by court order to protect the identity of the children.

We are all born pure, and innocent, and atheists. A clean slate. The minute we come into this world, things start to be piled onto us. Every day that we live we start to experience things, mostly good (we are babes in arms for god's sake!) and bad, as we get older. At first it is all the same to us because we do not have the mental capacity to discern good from bad. But we soon learn 2 + 2 is not always four. We get confused, we lose trust. Loss of trust could as well come from one's own parents and siblings. We call this loss of innocence. And this is when we learn to process what goes on around us and we learn that lying to avoid punishment is a valid strategy. As I said, loss of innocence. And so it goes on.
It is all too easy to say, this man went through this himself, why is he doing it to others? Well, people have different mental capabilities. From the ultra sane, rational, near-perfect equilibrium to the congenitally not particularly endowed with intelligence. It is the luck of the draw, a 'polza'.
And all of use are subject to the influences as described above. The most awful criminal could have been us had we been born to a different set of parents, another time, another place.
I would like to think that the professionals who operate within the legal system are aware of all this and mete out sentences accordingly. But even lawyers and judges are human who went, and are going still, through the human treadmill. I imagine they too get it wrong sometimes. Why, it is not unknown for judges and lawyers to end up being legally processed themselves. And THAT is scandalous because it shakes the Community's confidence and trust to the core. People lose confidence in the people who are supposed to guide them. It is a vicious circle. It is the loss of innocence. Learning to take responsibility for one's actions is one answer. But even that depends on a number of factors. Some will manage and some will fall through the net. Keeping in mind that we all have our petty transgressions. We may not be aware of these but in any case, as long as we dont get caught out. He who is without sin cast the first stone..... Quite!

Don't serial killers come from a similar background. Something in their youth triggered them to become murderers and take pleasure out of killing somebody. And they are given life sentences for their crimes. The main reason is to protect by incarceration. The second priority is to rehabilitate when it comes to these crimes. Not worth allowing these people back on the streets.
People now are campaigning again for the death penalty especially for pedophiles who rape little children. Parents want these people removed from society to protect their children.
In Britain, the situation is so bad that if you (a male adult) see a kid crying on the streets all alone and go to see what is the problem, because you suspect he/she might be lost, people around suddenly think of you as a possible pedophile approaching a little child all alone. This is why they cannot be let free again.
Abroad people feel that they should be identified, kept under constant surveillance and those who are guilty of pedophilia should be sentenced to life to protect children not just to satisfy justice. You can't fix the problem, because their urges are always there. The temptations are always there. They must be removed from society unfortunately, because some people here said it themselves. They can't help themselves and those guilty of the crime, have weak resolve.

Good job he was "only"abusing children and not growing cannabis plants he would have got more than 10years and even 10 years is not enough the children will suffer to a degree all their lives

I agree that he has to be jailed but this man needs intensive help otherwise when he comes out of jail things will be worse. Remember this man is also a victim of the same crime. The children also need intensive help.

I agree with everything that you said. I just don't understand why you have to say that this man was also a victim of the same crime (so we should not be harsh on him). let me tell you why : HE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WHAT HE WAS DOING!! he should have known the way he was hurting the children because he went through it him self! he should never have done this to the kids because he experienced it all. he should have known that what he is doing to the children is wrong. il- konsegwenzi tal- abbuz jafhom iktar minni u minnek ghax ghaddha minnhom hu stess.

I would like him to be in a solitary cell with only a screen, and on the screen for at least 3 years of his life, every day and every night, there should be pictures of his vctims, one after the other.Pictures of children playing, laughing, swimming........... a little child crying with a broken toy in his hands. Crying. All the time a voice saying: Look what you have done, look what you have done, look what you........
Nothing else.

How come Pedophilia and rape combined in one are given the same sentence as a person who smokes weed?

''The man was diagnosed with clinical depression and had been admitted to Mount Carmel Mental Hospital in the 1970s. He was sexually abused when he was younger.''
Are we supposed to excuse his horrific and monstrous acts on the children? Jailed for 10 years and he'll just serve just seven or so! Lenient sentences keep this society bogged down in crime as a result.

It is a known fact that in prison, child-abusers are the lowest of the low (the rationale goes like, I committed crimes BUT I never abused a child. A hierarchy of criminality in other words. The pecking order at work). He will have a very rough time and that is what people like to know.
Commenters here are wringing their hands at the thought that he will be out in a few years and he will child-rape again and neighbours won't know his identity and their children will be in danger all over again. People want blood. But at they same time they are admitting that prison does not work, does not rehabilitate. A custodial sentence by all means but most important, criminals need to learn what their actions do to them and those around them. This is called therapy and a piece of cake it is not.
I take this opportunity to remark that: because this happened in the wider community, people justly feel outrage and whatever else child-rape brings out in us. But there is no sense of scandal experienced. Rightfully, just condemnation. When child-abuse happens within the Church some see no difference between THAT abuse and this one here. I beg to differ. Child sexual abuse by a cleric engenders all the horror. Plus the scandal that shakes peoples identity to the core. Hence their preference to deny, to see no difference between two similar acts but the source/cause is vastly different by implication. Let us also not forget that if a criminal, any criminal confessed his/her sins - unlikely but hypothetically possible - the confessor is duty bound by Church law not to disclose the crime. What a joke!

10 years is too much cmon everyone makes a mistake in their life and he has a mental disability, just forgive him or at least reduce his sentence to something more appropriate.

The fact that he is sick is it taken into consideration??? I ask: who in the right state of mind would indulge in any immoral acts with children??? only a sick mind ... and a sick mind needs help and therapy not prison... what will society get by trowing him in ?? ask youself

If anything society will get protection from such monsters. prison is necessary together with therapy. Prison is there to protect law abiding citizens. I am sure that if such a tragedy touched one of your own you would assess this sentence differently.

Elementary dear Watson. Society gets protection for the next few years.

Society will get protection from him for at least 5 or 6 years. Therapy doesn't help with these people, nor does castration either chemical or physical. They are always a danger to children.

Let us leave the fact that he is said to have had clinical depression out of this. Sexual deviance in the shape of pedophilia is NOT excused by depression, it is not a symptom of it. If anything, most people who are clinically depressed go off sex. As regards being abused himself as a child, I would think that when one grows up one realizes that sex with children is wrong and that an appetite for children is against the law so why should one be excused for satisfying his urges instead of seeking help?

In such cases, we are told that the name is not being published to protect his victims' identity. Fair enough. But when he is released in about six years time, how will his new neighbours be aware of the great danger their sons and daughters are living in?

this man is dangerous - he will not stop his abuse- what will happen when he is released since his identity being hidden - will he be free to sexually abuse kids again. The Ministry of Justice must provide answers !

Feb 24th, 21:35
It's easy to say he's a bastard which he is... However he is as much as victim as a perpetrator. Was he not a poor child when abused....? That's the life he knows unfortunately and what we are reaping is as much a result if lack of justice on this person earlier and due to lack of such measures of a pedophile register.

This tends to be the standard defence now, he was abused as a child.

@ s. camilleri your comment makes no sense, i was sexually abused as a child and i also suffer from depression, but i would NEVER stoop this low as to inflict on other what was inflicted on me
because he was abused does not mean he has to do it to others, i'm sure he felt terrible when he was abused so he knew exactly what he was putting these children through
NO EXCUSE i think that courts should not be lenient because he went through the same thing when he was younger

There's something seriously wrong with our judicial system, or maybe with our antiquated laws. Immediate action is needed to make sure that sentences are in proportionate to the gravity of the offence. In this case a huge miscarriage of justice seems to have been carried out as a10 year sentence for such a grave offence is a joke. This demented twerp will be out in streets in 3/4 years time.
Mario Falzon
Feb 24th, 21:18
Are we serious? I hope that whoever handed the sentence is able to look in the mirror each morning and after remembering those three kids who had their lives ruined by this monster.

10 years jail for a child rapist is not a walk in the park. He will get hard time in prison and his punishment will be much bigger.
Last year a Gozo farmer got 18 years for growing cannabis.

S.M. Cuschieri

They will still be going through the pain for many years if not the whole of their life to come Stephanie. You cannot erase something like this from your system. I mean at times, when we hate someone for hurting us we cannot forgive and always remember it . Ahseb u ara this type of abuse.

Is this a joke or? only 10 years for raping a 5 year old and 8 year old for 5 year and a 13 year old? Is depression a good reason to rape young children. Mount Carmel seems to become a hotel for all those who do not want to stay in jail.
