Top ice hockey players will face off Saturday in Moscow at the invitation of Russian strongman Vladimir Putin to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Cold War era Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union.

The Summit Series, held in 1972, was the first ever meeting between the Soviets and an NHL-inclusive Canadian national ice hockey team.

In 1970s the Cold War between West and East was in full swing and intense feelings of nationalism were aroused by the contest, both in Can-ada and the Soviet Union.

In the series, four matches were played in Canada with four other clashes taking place in Moscow.

Canada won the series four games to three, with one match ending in a draw.
