The slaughter must stop
I was extremely depressed and upset to read (February 17) about the tragic death of a karrozzin horse that collapsed and died of dehydration. It is yet another horrible incident in a catalogue of macabre animal deaths that have become so frequent in Malta.
Not so long ago a cat was crucified in Mosta and a dog named Star was shot in a most appalling manner before being dumped. How many more inhumane incidents do we need to witness before Malta (ħanina, as the Arabs say) will become renowned as the slaughter island. Inspectors should make frequent visits to check on the well-being and condition of horses. It seems to me that these animals are too old and tired and most of them should be retired.
The animal rights groups in Malta are doing a great job but I urge them to increase the pressure on the authorities to introduce stiffer fines and prison sentences and, in certain cases, for licences of horse-drawn cabs to be terminated.

Unfortunately, there are only 2 persons representing the animal welfare NGOs in the Animal Welfare Council. Which means that they are outnumbered if they propose certain changes - in favour of animals. The NGOs are working as hard as they can, but, as usual, we all suffer from lack of funds and volunteers and time. There is only so much a handful of people can do to right the 'sins against animals' commited by a sizeable number of Maltese. The handful of cases that (unfortunately!) make it to the news are only the tip of the iceberg. I would never say 'the Maltese hate animals' - but I admit there are many who do - and a few of these are prepared to hurt the animals unlucky enough to cross their paths.

The problem in Malta is the LAW, anyone caught and convicted of these horrible crimes should get a long prison sentance and a large fine......... NONE of this going to "Confession" and asking for "Forgiveness"
