The 2011 final of the Computer Games Design – GameZing National Competition was held recently at the St James Cavalier and seven St Martin’s Institute of IT teams were among the 13 finalists who were vying for the original computer games coveted prize.

First prize was won by the St Martin’s Institute of IT student team Minja with their original game Pibbit. The team is led by Leon Cassar, with team members Andrew Brincat, Mark Borg, Blair Avellino and Jonathan Aquilina.

Second prize was also awarded to a St Martin’s Institute of IT student team Barbagann Games with its original game ScarFish. The team is led by Anthony Demanuele, supported by Robert Vella, Bernhardt Engerer, Ryan Sammut, Neville Cassar and Clive Ciappara. The team Barbagann Games was also commended for its original digital art.

The five other St Martin’s teams in the final were Eggzmen with Eggsciting, Team Cinetic with Navi, Jungle Developers with Escape From Concrete Jungle, Toxic Programming with Plumbing Mayhem and Socket 22 with Farm Crash. The St Martin’s Institute of IT faculty teaching for computer games design and development was led by Neville Attard the leader of the Games Development Challenge at St Martin’s, supported by Gareth Lewis, a veteran of computer games development in the UK, Jonathan Barbara, the head of department for computing and information systems at St Martin’s, as well as lecturers from the department, namely Thomas Cuschieri, Stephen Caruana, Joe Camilleri and Keith Pace.

St Martin’s Institute of IT is a pioneer in introducing undergraduate education for computer games design and development for Maltese students. The institute set up the Games Development Challenge in July 2010 and again in 2011 offered St Martin’s students the opportunity to learn all about the professional way to design and develop a computer game from scratch.
