Fire damages City Gate kiosk

A kiosk just outside City Gate, Valletta, was estensively damaged by fire last night.

The fire brigade was on the scene to put out the flames at about 1 a.m.

The fire appears to have started inside the kiosk. Foul play has been ruled out. No one was injured.

The kiosks will soon be demolished? Apparently, you do not know Malta well enough, Mr. Price. I'll believe it when I see it.

Regarding obesity, most of Europe are becoming obese with all these fast food, all fat and rubbish, which I sorry to say that it's not typical Maltese and neither are the kiosk . It's a pity we Maltese try to like other countries. I totally agree that the kiosk are an eyesore and should be removed. They should have never allowed them to be there in the first place. Now that we no longer have a city gate and with the design of Enzo Piano we should have something ultra modern , where we will pay millions for Piano's concultancy

Maybe we should introduce healthy food such as fish & chips!!!!

Re obesity... true but Maltese children top the list.

I also blame the fast food chains for offering free toys with fast food to children. People are becoming addicted to these restaurants because of the toys.

If we really want our kids to eat healthy this shouldn't be allowed. When we were kids we never had such fast food chains and still some of us are obese... let alone our kids that from a tender age of 3 they already want to go these food chains.

Something that really annoys me is that few years ago a popular kids' programme airing on a local TV station was sponsored by one of the fast food chains!!! So we have parents telling their kids to eat healty and their favourite TV show telling them to eat junk and they get a free toy!! Who wins?

This isn't a purely Maltese problem, Billie. Junk food is rife throughout the western world.

If you're looking to blame someone, then blame the Americans. (They probably designed the ugly kiosks too.)

Mr.Saliba, you would not say that if it was yours !!!!!!

It would have been very nice if the Kiosk was yours and that was your only source of income.

Well said Matt,

Some shop owners spend thousands on design and decor, yet this guy here comes to dump his ugly aluminium kiosk outside our capital city!!!

When are they going to get rid of the rest of them??? Where is MEPA??? Busy scheming with some developers probably.

Mr. Micallef . I hope you are aware that another GUY is going to make your capital city look uglier with a useless building just inside the city gate spending millions !!!!

@ C Zammit

I'm not too fond of the Piano designs myself. But that doesn't remove from the fact that those kiosks are ugly.

Tajjeb mela because the Piano design is not to our liking we should leave the ugly kiosks there? La kollox ikrah inkomplu inkerrhu.

@ Micallef . I agree that it was not a nice structure but as you might know these people are waiting for the kiosk to be moved to another place and so why spend so much money to refurbish !

S Micallef

Feb 22nd, 11:13

@ C Zammit - those kiosks were ugly to begin with so being moved to another place soon is NOT an excuse.

One wonders how they got there in the first place. Probably they started off as kiosks which were moved every evening but in true Maltese squatting fashion somehow became fixed over the years.

Same old story,

I am sure the owners are insured for loss of business so I wouldn't ruffle my feathers if I were you! At least the owners might decide to refurbish with the insurance money!
