All councils but one submit accounts on time
Nearly all councils have submitted their management financial accounts for auditing within the stipulated time, the government said.
This is the first time, since councils were set up, that all councils but one submitted their accounts on time.
The government said this was in contrast with the situation last year when only three councils submitted their accounts on time.
The department had imposed a fine on those submitting their accounts late.
Only the Zebbug council will be submitting its accounts late this year because of revisions needed in the accounts as presented by the council's accountant.
The council is working to conclude this exercise in the shortest time possible, the government said.

Dear Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition: do we really need 65 Local Councils in this tiny country? Please consider the national needs first by cutting the unnecessary expense. Thirteen Councils, one for each electoral division is certainly enough....and it saves money and is more manageable. Also corrupt practices would be reduced. A win- win situation all round.
Cut out this scandalous waste of public funds.

This is the most unjust way of doing things. Why the people have to suffer fines because of late submissions of accounts? These are monies given to the local residents and taken from them because the Mayor and the executive secretary fail to send account statements on time. The punishment must be taken by those who are responsible to send such account statements on time and not by the residents of the locality. Instead of doing the right things, the government does things right by punishing its people.Very nice indeed!!!
