Tenants of government property can redeem their temporary emphyteusis through a scheme that has been reopened for six months.

Originally launched in 2001, the scheme had been temporarily suspended three years ago to catch up with the huge backlog of applications. In fact, more than 5,500 people applied and, of these, 1,000 applications still have to be processed.

In 2011 alone, 430 redeemed their emphyteusis and became home owners. Applications can be downloaded online from www.gpd.gov.mt or from the Joint Office at Auberge de Baviere, St Sebastian Street, Valletta.
