Debono Grech to contest next election

Veteran Labour MP Joe Debono Grech will contest the next general election, his party has confirmed.
The news comes after Mr Debono Grech, 72, gave a characteristically fiery speech on Sunday where he said people had been asking him whether he would stand for election again.
Without being clear whether he would run or not, he said he would keep working for the party as long as his health allowed.
Responding to questions by The Times, the Labour Party said that as an MP, Mr Debono Grech was considered to be a candidate “unless he declares otherwise or other issues arise”.
“We don’t foresee such issues,” the party spokesman added.
Asked whether the elderly MP was an appropriate face for a party projecting itself as moderate and progressive, the spokesman defended Mr Debono Grech by comparing him to Transport Minister Austin Gatt, who was recently asked by the Prime Minister to reconsider his retirement. On Sunday, Mr Debono Grech said he could not wait to see Labour leader Joseph Muscat become Prime Minister.

A neighbour and friend of mine who happens to be an ex-member of the PN executive council and is well known in PN circles especially in our town knows JDG quite well and would not hesitate to say what an upright and friendly person Joe is despite the wrong impression some people get of him.

Joe Debono Grech is an BAD REMINDER of what to expect under PL rule.
For those too young to remember, ask your parents about this fiery and feisty
extremist who was part and parcel of the dictator Mintoff's violent klikka that
ruled with an iron fist over Malta in the 70s and 80s.
Some change in Partit Laburista!!! Or as they say "Old habits die hard"

Has Joe Debono Grech ever been accused let alone convicted of any violence?
What is wrong so wrong with governing with an iron fist that stating you have IDEJN SODI which just do not hold true and there is a general laissez fairing feeling all around?
There will always be change in Labour and it will be a sure positive change for Malta and the Maltese, especially those living in Malta not in Los Angeles!

Dr Muscat it is time to leave the Past behind. Person like Joe Debono Grech does not need to contest the election for the Labor Party. I am disgusted to read about it. The MLP has not changed. I don’t believe that the PN has changed much but both partied needs to stop recycle Past Politicians, the greatest things about the Labor Party is they believe in the Maltese Worker, while the PN adore Non Maltese for Expert Advice. Malta has a great Foreign Policy thanks to the Late Dr Guido De Marco. I cannot say the same for the US, where foreign policy is is low thanks to our Barack Obama Administration and lack of vision.

I think it is about time we take a very serious look at the Green Party members. It always boils down to the same thing, and that is business as usual, with the PL pointing fingers at the PN and the PN pointing fingers at the PL and the citizen is the one left holding the bag.. We bitch and complain and yet we keep voting for the same people that we bitch about. Why do we go through this torture in every election. We need a change of leadership and a change of direction. We need new blood, pardon me for saying this, but we do need people like JPO and especially more so people like Franco Debono. Politicians that are not afraid to go against the corrupt government they represent, in order to represent the people who elected them. If you don't like something do something about it and stop complaining. You reap what you sow. JPO won his battle against all odds, and FD is managing to change some of the archaic and misleading laws we have in this country. We need people who are not afraid to fight for what is right, even if they have to go against their own party. We need people who will put people first before they do their own party. Yes, we need politicians who care and we need politicians who do not let our National Airline falter. We want politicians who do not use Air Malta for perks and freebies. We need to change the archaic laws and stop using the courts as a convenience for those who have, and those who have not. We need responsible politicians to stop using Hotel Corradino and Hotel Mt Carmel as a drug distribution centre. Malta needs a change of leadership and a change of direction. " Il- baqra milli jkollha ittik." We need a leader that will renovate St Lukes Hospital and use it as a secondary hospital to ease the congestion at Mater Dei? We need politicians that talk and be able to do the walk. But where do we find such capable politicians?

Criticism against JDG have nothing to do with his age per se. His age comes into play as it is contradictory to the image Joseph Muscat wants to portray of thePL. Most importantly, It is his outrages statements that one take issue with and his direct involvemt in hte dark ages of Maltese Politics . JDG, among others, is a "Poster Boy" of the dark ages in Maltese Politics.

I do not understand the green spleen expressed by some bloggers. As far as I know JDG never formed part of an evil oligarchy of elites like the PN, and he was never embroiled in corruption like the Gonzi PN. Talk to those Nazzjonalisti who worked under JDG and they tell you that he was a real gentleman. I wish JDG all the best and more years to work for the good of the people especially the poor, the old and the disabled.

Feb 22nd, 13:38
Dear Victor '.........green spleen expressed by some bloggers.......'
I would say immediately ...chi parla :) !! Your comments are not put so........... 'teneri' are they?
Any way ....each one has different ways of expressing oneself.
What I really find unfair and sad is when some comments relate to a person of a certain age ...as not being useful any more in society ...extinct.....this is not fair at all and it shows lack of respect .
Whoever it is, whether he or she is somewhat advanced in age , one should show respect.
Victor Vella
Feb 22nd, 14:11
@ John Scerri
Today I show respect for you more than other times. Sorry if I sometimes I act in a manner that may offend you. But may I remind you that I used to work for an parastatal company that made its employees rich with the employment the MLP has created and they used to show their hatred to the MLP. Today these same people have to be forced to leave the company. Although their attitude to the LP now has changed. I still am traumatized with those hard core PN adherents that did their best to smudge the name of the company to achieve undeserved promotions that today put the company in the state of bankruptcy . Again I apologize.
John Scerri
Feb 22nd, 15:00
Dear Victor ...I understand you ...and how well I do.!...
This happened to me as well ...when I started work.... I was surrounded by nearly 95% of MLP supporters on my work place way back so many decades ago and...... you know ...the first question they asked me during my first tea break was whether I sided with Mintoff or Borg Olivier .
I was a very young lad more interested in cars and sports...... no interest whatsoever in politics ,
I did not reply and they stamped me as Nationalist....My psycological torture started and lasted a good 12 years which also included vandalism to my private property.
Oh yes I know how you feel .....but ...on the other hand ...I am proud not to have sought revenge in any form and I am proud to have had colleagues of mine who respected me although our political views were different.
The problem with some is that they are not capable of criticising the argument or action or procedure but they attack the person ...this is wrong.
Mr Joe Micallef
Feb 22nd, 15:03
I know "relatively" close some nationalists who worked under JDG - and, contrary to what you say they have a very vivid record of the gross ineptness of this "labour only" politician. I suggest you shut up and stop offending people's memories.
John Scerri
Feb 22nd, 13:04
Joe Debono Grech is, I think , one of those you might call in Maltese ....'nar tat-tiben'.
He speaks loud . He is not the soft speaking, slow talking lawyer type public speaker..... but in truth I think he did his job as minister in his time better than other MLP ministers who had many more academic qualifications than he did.
This is to his credit .
On the other hand I am bound to assume that MLP is using Joe D G like it used Dom Mintoff...... To lift Labour moral through their speeches...the type of which the Old Labour fancy ..... shouting , fist showing and the likes.
So in other words ....'NEW' Labour is using 'OLD' Labour to do the dirty work to win the elections.
If they will succeed we shall see ..time will tell.

There are a number of PN MPs who were active in the 70s and 80s and who, directly or indirectly, contributed to the situation back then.. it is naive to believe that it was all the fault of the MLP. Except if your glasses or eyeballs have a blue tinge of course. You don't see much outrage at these MPs still in parliament and contesting the next election.
That said, I don't think Joe Debono Grech should be contesting with the PL.. he should realize his time is over, or the party should tell him so.
