A scheme enabling tenants of state owned residential property to redeem their temporary emphyteusis has been reopened for six months, the government said.

The scheme, launched in 2001, had been temporarily suspended in 2009 so that the backlog which its success had created would be cleared. A total of 5,500 applications had been submitted. Around 1,000 applications remain to be processed.

In the past year, 430 redeemed their emphyteusis and became home owners.

Applications can be obtained online or from the Joint Office within the Government Property Section at Auberge de Baviere, Triq San Sebastjan, Valletta.
