A man allegedly caught red-handed before committing a burglary from a residence in Paola yesterday is pleading not guilty and claiming a case of mistaken identity.

George Xuereb, 46, of Safi also pleaded not guilty to breaching the conditions of a previous release. He was remanded in custody.

Inspector Jurgen Vella and Spiridione Zammit said Mr Xuereb was caught on the roof of the residence by the police. He could not be trusted because he was claiming he had been invited on the roof by someone he was refusing to name.

Legal aid lawyer Mark Busuttil denied his client was caught red-handed and said he had indicated two people to the police who he could identify if arraigned.

He said Mr Xuereb was ready to cooperate with the police.
