The Housing Authority’s scheme ‘Acquiring my Home’ is being extended for six months, until August 2.

The main aim of the scheme, which was launched last year, is to offer the opportunity to legal tenants who live in government property in Cottonera to buy the property they reside in at a subsidised price and become home owners.

The beneficiaries of the scheme are those tenants who have been renting out the same residence for more than seven years. Both Maltese and EU citizens can benefit and are eligible.

However, the tenants should have been occupying the same residence for more than seven consecutive years. Such properties will be sold at a subsidised price under reasonable conditions.

Those interested may submit an application. This will allow the Housing Authority to collect the documentation necessary for the sale of the property.

At this stage the authority will also be able to calculate the market price of the property and the subsidy applicable.

After the initial process, the applicant must submit a second application together with all the necessary information and documentation.

If the applicant qualifies, the subsidised price can be confirmed. The tenant will then be able to sign a preliminary agreement with the Housing Authority that will eventually lead to the final contract.
