A company that does subcontracting work for firms such as Playmobil and Methode Electronics has invested in modern machinery that consumes 70 per cent less energy.

Uniplast is an example of the success Malta was having in the manufacturing sector, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said during a visit to the company’s plant at the Bulebel industrial estate yesterday.

The company works around the clock moulding, printing and packaging plastic components.

Having started its operations 17 years ago with only 10 people, the company today has a workforce of 85 and plans are afoot for 20 more workers to be recruited in the near future.

Dr Gonzi said the sector’s contribution to economic growth last year was 13 per cent and generated 250 part-time and full-time jobs. Malta supplied markets that remained strong despite the difficult economic scenario.

He said that, since 2008, Malta Enterprise had approved 130 new factories or factory extensions that would generate 3,400 more jobs.

Dr Gonzi spoke about how companies were utilising European Regional and Development Funds to upgrade their products or workplace environment.
