A creative teenager brought smiles and good cheer to the otherwise cold and windy Republic Street yesterday by handing out “compliments for free” as part of his involvement in the Unification Movement.

Armed with a pink umbrella, just in case the heavens opened up, 18-year-old Luke Johnston, from Washington, complimented people on how well they looked or in some cases for wearing a “lovely” jacket.

Mr Johnston has not actually lost his marbles but was putting into practice what he lived and breathed as part of the Unification Church or Unification Movement – a religious movement founded in 1954 in South Korea by Korean religious leader Sun Myung Moon. Mr Johnston explained that he was one of seven members which made up the Malta team and was more of a missionary, challenging people on the meaning of life.

As I said before beware. This sect is dangerous. You wll be hooked for life. They promise you many things but they only want from you is your money.

Do you really think that this person wanted your money? Seriously? All he wanted was to compliment you and to brighten up your day. Even if he received a single smile back from you then his purpose would be fulfilled, he was not after anyone's money. That's the beauty of love - to give unceasingly without expecting anything in return. I personally think that sounded like a really miserable person when you said that 'they come up to you acting like old friends'? You should feel that this person is a long lost brother of yours and at least make some sort of effort to respond, you'll never get the chance to make him feel happy again. You only get one life to bring joy with.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Is that a free compliment?
