Reasons to be cheerful
Free compliments for everyone, as Luke Johnston from Washington practises what he believes in as part of the religious Unification Movement. Photo: Chris Sant Fournier
A creative teenager brought smiles and good cheer to the otherwise cold and windy Republic Street yesterday by handing out “compliments for free” as part of his involvement in the Unification Movement.
Armed with a pink umbrella, just in case the heavens opened up, 18-year-old Luke Johnston, from Washington, complimented people on how well they looked or in some cases for wearing a “lovely” jacket.
Mr Johnston has not actually lost his marbles but was putting into practice what he lived and breathed as part of the Unification Church or Unification Movement – a religious movement founded in 1954 in South Korea by Korean religious leader Sun Myung Moon. Mr Johnston explained that he was one of seven members which made up the Malta team and was more of a missionary, challenging people on the meaning of life.

To believe in brainwashing you must be mentally confused. At the end of the day, you have control over yourself and all the decisions you make are up to you, no matter how much you may be influenced by the people around you. People who believe in brainwashing must be those kind of people who give in to peer pressure and use it as an excuse. Classic idiotic typical person who drinks, smokes, and takes drugs. Well done. That kind of person is a great contribution to society.

You call them a 'dangerous sect'? Yet the only thing which has been done wrong here is giving out free compliments? I think that you people need to stop judging based on media lies. Make up your own opinion. The Unification church is a truly beautiful religion which only strives for peace; so I'm not sure what you have against it. We were given free will in this life for a reason -- to make up our own minds on what is right and wrong so I don't believe that you're doing anyone justice by hating on something that you know nothing about. Also, you say that they only want your money? The UC church is one of the poorest because they're always pouring out so much money into their global projects for peace -- pouring out love to restore this world to how it was meant to be. People like you really need to change your mindset, not just on the UC church, but on life. If you don't understand something, then you shouldn't absolutely hate and detest it and sway other people's opinions on it, that's the same for every concept. Only once you've tried to understand it with a open heart and have then developed your own opinion on it can you say something negative towards something else.

Wow....just wow. The utter ignorance of the above commenters is astounding.....and sad. The fact that you so readily believe in the "brainwashing" idea means that you easily believe what you are told by the news and don't think any further. That makes you little more than simple-minded sheep. Very sad.
I joined as a member of the Unification Church over 20 years ago and met a lot of sad people like you....unfortunately. On the other hand, I did also meet people who had enough of a spine and intelligence to actually make a little effort and find out more about us and our movement. And they quickly realized that "brainwashing" was a ridiculous hoax.
Oh and the other thing is that from the numbers of people who listened to the Church's teachings, an average of only 2% actually joined. Doesn't sound so "impossible to escape", does it? Idiotic.

The Moonies are a dangerous sect.....beware. All they do is brain wash youths for their ends, and once under their clutches it is neigh impossible to escape. So “beware wolves in sheep clothing”.

If this is Malta's contemporary version of the Moonie sect I do not think that the rest of us have anything to grin about.

Ah yes, The Moonies
"...much controversy about the Moonie movement is the allegations that their followers are brainwashed. The movement is reported to pray on the discontent, anger and disenfranchisement of the young, transforming their youthful concepts and values into the dogma of Reverend Sun Myung Moon. "
One needs only to search the net the Unification Church and their exempt tax status.

This one of the many annoying people presently pestering people in Republic Street. I work in Valletta and on my way down Republic Street, each morning I am accosted by a number of persons trying to sell cosmetics, books, mobile phone contracts and even holy pictures. These people - especialy like this guy in the picture - are so annoying as you do not know these people and they come up to you acting like old friends and all they want really is your money. I just wish the Valletta LC will do something about them.

Do you really think that this person wanted your money? Seriously? All he wanted was to compliment you and to brighten up your day. Even if he received a single smile back from you then his purpose would be fulfilled, he was not after anyone's money. That's the beauty of love - to give unceasingly without expecting anything in return. I personally think that sounded like a really miserable person when you said that 'they come up to you acting like old friends'? You should feel that this person is a long lost brother of yours and at least make some sort of effort to respond, you'll never get the chance to make him feel happy again. You only get one life to bring joy with.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Is that a free compliment?
