A woman who stands accused of the attempted murder of her husband told the police that she stabbed her husband during a raging argument after he made fun of her as she tried to commit suicide, a court was told this morning.

Charmaine Ellul stands accused of the attempted murder of her husband after an argument at their house last November.

Police Inspector Carlos Cordina said he had gone to hospital to interview the accused, but she was initially agitated and refused to speak to him.

Later she asked to speak to him and recounted what had taken place.

The inspector said the woman had admitted to stabbing her husband Jason after an argument during which she said, he had called her an ugly whore.

She claimed that she grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him when he tried to assault her.

The inspector said that Mrs Ellul had told the police that during the argument, she tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of pills. Her husband made fun of her. Instead of trying to stop her because she was putting her life in danger, he told her to stop because the pills were expensive.

The case continues.
