The 26-year-old man who suffered serious burns from an explosion in a Żebbuġ garage on Monday is in a stable condition and has been moved out of the hospital’s intensive therapy unit, police said.

The explosion took place at about 3 p.m. when the young man and a 55-year-old man, both from the village, were carrying out some works in a garage in St Martin Street.

Sources said the men were cutting an empty metal 45-gallon tank, usually used to store chemicals. It is believed they were using a blow torch that may have ignited fumes in the tank.

The 26-year-old suffered serious burns including facial injuries. The other man suffered slight injuries.
