Jewellery shop emptied in elaborate burglary
Jewellery worth some €100,000 was stolen on Thursday-Friday night in an elaborate burglary from a jewellery shop in Qormi.
Informed sources said the burglars had 'emptied' J Caruana Jewellery. They are believed to have first forced their way into an empty nearby house, gone up to the roof and then down to a pharmacy adjoining the jewellery.
They removed bricks from the common wall and used welding equipment to cut a 1-metre hole through a steel sheet almost 1cm thick which also separated the two shops.
They then proceeded to take several kilos of gold items including watches, bracelets and necklaces.
The operation is believed to have taken some hours.
The way the burglary was carried out was similar to another in Mosta a few weeks ago, when a considerable amount of jewellery was also stolen.

With today's advance in technology, there is no reason for jewellers not to install hidden CCTV cameras in their shops. This could be a help for police investigations ishould a burglary occur.
My consulting fee is gratis, however a small donation to the Putinu fund would be most welcome.

This also reminds me of a good Italian comedy "I Soliti Ignoti" where, however, everything that could go wrong does go wrong.

If you have never seen this film try and see it. Its "old style" Italian comedy at its best. But joking apart there are many films out there which could have been an inspiration for this type of robbery.

You beat me to it Koludrovic,Stephen.
If I remember rightly, this film was famous for not having a single word uttered during the half-hour heist. And the bonus is that I discovered that Milva, a lifelong favourite of mine, covered the title song. Not her best, but hey!....

What?! no alarm? I wonder if they had a Magali Noel with them? On the lookout, maybe?!

One has to have a sense of humour to survive this thing we call life. That said, and joking apart, I hope the criminals get caught and that the jeweller recoups his losses. And get that alarm fixed, or installed.

Does it occur to anybody that these are the same people doing the robberies? Very professional indeed. What happened to burglar alarms and cctv cameras? Catch these low life thieves before they clean out all the jewelry shops in Malta. Unless this jewelry is being fenced outside the country, the police should be able to trace the stolen merchandise. Maybe a little help from the outside might help solve this problem. Enter Scotland Yard? Have the insurance companies and the shop owners offered any reward to anybody identifying the any of the thieves? Be surprised what a big mouth money has?

The burglars must have taken the idea from the old French film Rififi.

This is what decisions based on vote catching gets you into.
The greek governments gave whatever the unions wanted so that they would not be bothered.
Our past governments did not do this.
They negotiated with the unions what the country could afford.
The Greeks need to be brought to their senses , made to pay their taxes , their VAT , bring their wages at par to Europe's average , and their welfare benefits to represent what is their real need.
As the Minister said , nobody owns Greece anything. The least they can do is carry the cross they built for themselves ,

So do you think that the robbers of this jewelry are sent by the Greek government to keep the big greek politicos in the lifestyle they been accustom to from the heist's proceeds?

Is it possible that burglar alarms are not that effective or the shop did not have one installed? That is strange!
