A Romanian woman standing trial for drug importation kept insisting yesterday that she had no idea that her bag contained a kilo of heroin.

Adela Mariana Creta, 24, arrived by air from Brussels in August 2009. She was carrying a bag, which, she claimed, was given to her by her boyfriend.

Lawyer Maurizio Cordina, from the Attorney General’s office, wondered how she could not have suspected anything. He noted that, according to her version of events, she came Malta for a one-day trip without a hotel reservation but her boyfriend still gave her a suitcase instructing her to contact him on her mobile phone when she got here.

However, Ms Creta insisted that she knew nothing about the drugs adding that this was her second trip to Malta.

According to the bill of indictment, the drugs were worth about €41,000.

The jurors are expected to retire to deliberate today.
