Vehicle-activated signs ‘simply informative’
Vehicle-activated signs (VAS) being installed on Malta’s roads are placed with a view to information about 100 metres from where the indicated speed becomes operative as a speed limit. Answering a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Ċensu Galea specifically about the VAS recently installed between the two tunnels close to university, Transport Minister Austin Gatt said 85.8 per cent of passing vehicles had been recorded as exceeding the 40 mph speed limit.
The sign was placed about 100 metres before the speed limit point.

It's a bit naive isn't it. All this has done is send a message to drivers not to slow down for VAS warning signs.
1. If the VAS sign was 100m before the posted 40KPH limit did TM honestly expect less than 85% of drivers to slow down.
2. If the VAS sign was 100m ahead of the posted speed limit clearly the 85% of drivers were NOT breaking any speed limit!
3. Why wasn't the said VAS signage placed a; within the speed limit zone, and; b: in the other carriage way |(northbound) where there is a 'real' accident black spot!

What took our bright transport minister Austin gatt(of Arriva fiasco)so long to put signs to indicate where a speed camera can be activated are we going to have that long line painted on the road as well indicating that you are clear of the camera focus,if so please use proper road paint that last at least a couple of years like they do in the rest of the EU.

"Transport Minister Austin Gatt said 85.8 per cent of passing vehicles had been recorded as exceeding the 40 mph (kph) speed limit."
And 99.997% of those 86% who do so (the rest don't do so only because they would be stuck in traffic) negotiate the area without incident, just as they would were they to drive past the speed cameras without specifically slowing down for them.
There must be a message in there, somewhere.
