A Romanian woman who arrived in Malta carrying one kilogram of heroin hidden in her suitcase yesterday protested her innocence saying she had no idea what was concealed inside the bag.

Taking the witness stand, the Romanian woman, Adela Mariana Creta, 24, said the bag had been given to her by her boyfriend and he was meant to come to Malta too but pulled out just hours before the flight in August 2009.

He told her he would meet her on the island two days later but would keep in touch over the phone. When the police found the drugs in a false bottom she at first did not know what it was but on hearing an officer say the word ‘drugs’ she burst out crying and shouted that she had good reason not to trust men.

She had told the police in her statement that she was with her boyfriend just for the money and that she actually had a long-term girlfriend.

Her testimony was suspended yesterday evening and will resume this morning.
