I am in same predicament, along with hundreds of others, as the authors of the letters An Identity Crisis (January 30) and Changing Name On A Whim (February 1), which were about name changes on identity cards and passports.
I have been called George since birth and signed George on all documents like bank accounts, contracts, travel tickets etc., only to now discover, at 75, that my real name is Giorgio, with all the inconvenience this is causing me.
The identity card officer told me they could replace the card and add “also known as George” next to Giorgio.
But the Passport Office is refusing to add “bearer is also known as George” on the Observations page of the passport as it used to do up to some time ago before they turned biometric. If this endorsement were again introduced it would at least alleviate a bit trouble travellers encounter when booking, checking in and out and entering foreign countries.
