A total 43,747 operations were held at Mater Dei Hospital last year. This is 1,952 more than in 2010, Health Minister Joseph Cassar said.

He said these were divided into 6,948 emergency interventions and 36,799 planned operations. The number of planned operations in 2010 was 35,347.

Dr Cassar this was the biggest number of operations ever carried out in Malta in one year and confirmed the improvements made in the planning of operations.

The government said that the number of operations had drastically increased since the opening of Mater Dei. In 2007 32,746 operations were carried out, 11,001 less than last year.
