Hibs beaten

Hibs vs Luxol... a tight encounter.

Hibs vs Luxol... a tight encounter.

On Sunday, Luxol had the better of Hibs Melita Gardens to maintain their unbeaten record in the Women’s League and keep in touch with early pacesetters Depiro McDonalds who found little resistance from Qormi Phoenix.

In the match of the weekend, Luxol got the revenge they were seeking when they had the better of Hibs in a hard-fought match that required extra-time to determine a winner.

In the end, the Paolites conceded a third successive defeat... a rarity in the league in recent years.

Hibs shaded the first quarter which they won 18-12 but eight consecutive points as the second session got underway allowed Luxol to go in front and maintain their lead until half-time (25-23).

In a low-scoring third quarter, Luxol held the edge to start the last ten minutes 33-31 ahead but with five minutes left, Hibs hit a bright patch only for Luxol to reel their opponents back in and levelling at 46-all.

With seconds left on the watch, Joselle Cardona had two free-throws for Hibs but missed both and the match dragged into extra-time.

Luxol looked the fresher side and opened a 56-48 lead. Hibs tried hard to get back in it but Luxol held on for a 57-54 win.

Depiro were all over Qormi right from the start and after opening a 34-15 half-time lead, they increased the pressure for a comfortable 80-27 victory.

Also last weekend, Athleta recorded their first victory after beating lowly Starlites.

Starlites kept the pace until half-time but then Athleta took control and held a reassuring 46-18 lead for the last ten minutes. They finished 58-27 winners.

Standings: Depiro 8 (4-0), Luxol 6 (3-0), Loyola 6 (3-0), Hibs 5 (1-3), Athleta 5 (1-3), Starlites 3 (0-3), Qormi 3 (0-3).

Top scorers: R. Rasanska (Athleta) 81, L. Gipson (Hibs) 76, C. Grima (Loyola) 58, R. Murphy (Luxol) 57, L. Sciberras (Athleta) 52.

Next fixtures: Saturday, 17.15 Luxol vs Qormi. Sunday, 13.00 Depiro vs Loyola.
