Situation in Syria 'unacceptable' - Borg
Foreign Minister Tonio Borg has described the current situation in Syria as unacceptable.
"We owe it to the Syrian people not to close our eyes to the continuing repression. We support the efforts of the League of Arab States which is doing its utmost end this unacceptable state of affairs," he said in a statement.
The statement was issued as Syrian government forces used tanks and missiles to crack down on civilians protesting against the government in Homs and other cities.
"We condemn the ongoing bloodshed and stand by the Syrian people. The violence must stop immediately. President Assad should immediately end the killing of civilians and withdraw the Syrian army from besieged towns and cities. This will make room for a peaceful transition for the sake of his country," Dr Borg said.
He said that Malta will continue to support the people of Syria and the Arab League to find an end to the violence and allow a Syrian-led political transition.

How is this support manifesting itself exactly in any tangible form ?As fine words don't stop tanks nor prevent bullets being fired or innocent people -including women and children-being murdered.

Of course the situation in Syria is unacceptable and Minister Tonio Borg is right to pronounce on this unacceptability. HOWEVER, the current political situation in Malta is also unacceptable, yet Minister Borg is one of those who finds it entirely acceptable. That is what is termed as political hypocrisy. How can a politician denounce another country when his own is totally unstable? And please...no wise guys rushing in to write that in Syria people are dying and that in Malta we are all eating pizza and drinking wine. The comparison is not in the violence and the deaths, it is on what is and what is not acceptable.

If only Syria had oil and gas than things would be different.

Tell that to CHINA and RUSSIA then.
It is those two that keep vetoing actions to pacify the situation in Syria.

Why all this hatred and if nothing is happening. Russia and China should revert their decisions because a lot of innocent people are being hit. Where is the responsability of the Big countries on these irrisponsabile governments threating human beings as were insects.

That is as likely to happen as the US lifting its veto on innumerable UN Security Council Resolutions condemning Israel for its mistreatment of Palestinians and occupation of Palestinian territory. Two can play the game.

I bet the Syrian authorities are shaking at the thought of disappointing Antonio Borg. To all politicains out there, keep this in mind. Public Condemnation does not do anything, it just states the painfully obvious and acts as a replacement to either taking action or to admitting that you have absolutely no control over these events and should they actually happen here in our country, you'd still be just as powerless. Thank you very much. Moving on.
