PN leadership nominations open
Nominations for the PN leadership contest opened today and remain open up to February 15.
The contest is being held at the request of Lawrence Gonzi after MP Franco Debono demanded that the prime minister or those who he said were responsible for the current political crisis, should shoulder their responsibilities.
Dr Gonzi has said he will be a candidate. However he is unlikely to be contested.
The secret ballot will be held on February 25. The result will be announced on the same day and if no second round is needed, the party leader will address the party council on February 26. Should a second round be needed, it will be held on March 3, with the speech on March 4.
The winner has to achieve two-thirds of the votes in order to be declared elected in the first round, after which a simple majority would be sufficient.
The electoral commission will be chaired by former minister Michael Refalo, assisted by MEP David Casa, Dr. Anne Fenech (AZAD); Sonia Vancell (President MNPN) and Boris Xerri (PN treasurer).

This does not make sense except in the thwarted minds of the GonziPN clique who want to keep the electorate in 'servile fearfulness'.

Tahsbu li l-Poplu mazzun?? Il-maggoranza fil-Parlament triduha mhux fil-partit, jew irrangaw ma Franco nkella morru ghall-elezzjoni generali. Il-pajjiz mhux partit li jiggranfa mal-poter irid imma partit li ghandu gvern stabbli. Jekk Alfred Sant ma kellu xejn zgur kellu l-IRGULIJA, haga li haddiehor m'ghandux.

GonziPN has lost the majority in parliament and not within the PN. So how exactly is this PN leadership elections supposed to solve his problems ?
Mr Michael Debono
Feb 6th, 18:17
So the government of Malta is subject to a local political party The P.N.
The country at a standstill up to who knows when. First for voting the for counting. Application to stand for leader ought to have been justr two days not a forthnight. The P.N. is acting like a democratic dictator.

"Dr Gonzi has said he will be a candidate." In case he hadn't noticed he's the leader at the moment and as he hasn't stepped down and therefore there is no vacancy how the hell can he be a candidate? As Helen Reddy sang in the song Angie Baby, 'It's so nice to be insane, no one asks you to explain!'

For your kindest information, even if Dr Gonzi does not resign or does not have any candidates to contest his leadership. He did much more than that. He puts himself to scrutiny by a private vote from the delegates which means that one can vote against him or even cancel the vote too!!
James Tyrrell
Feb 6th, 20:12
Raymond this is a leadership vote for a position that is not vacant or to put it another way a waste of time and money, something Gonzipn seem to have perfected!

The farce in this election is that as from yesterday, the GONE---ZEE---PN has vanished and we are back with, the old slogan of Partit Nazzjonalista, at least the change has started.

'The winner has to achieve two-thirds of the votes in order to be declared elected in the first round, after which a simple majority would be sufficient.'
Dr.Gonzi wants to know if he has the backing of ALL the party ....the stress was on the word ALL. In my opinion a good majority will be over 90 %
I expect Dr.Gonzi not to be happy with only two thirds of the votes ....If this will be so then I expect he will resign and another election will be made to elect a new leader and hence a new PM.
The good thing about this is that it is a secret vote.
This is no Farce.
The only Farce is the brainwashing of MLP supporters leading them to believe that elections are next month by all the MLP media ...BOLOH !!!!

Boloh???? taf kif ikunu il-boloh? ha nispjegalek kif nifimha jien.
Boloh huma dawk in -nies li leader taghhom ( jekk tista isejahlu leader) jbellalhom il-holm li f'Malta kollox perfett u jmorru jcapcpulu.
Boloh huma dawk in-nies li avolja meta jifthu kont tad dawl jiehdu qata, xorta jghidu viva Gonzipn.
Boloh huma nies bhalek li jghajru lil hadtiehor boloh Sur Scerri.
U nehhijha min mohhok li jekk Gonzipn ma jgibx two thirds tal voti ha jirizenja, ghax Gonzipn ghandu sponsor tajjeb tas super glue li qed juzah kuljum mas siggu tal poter.
Iva mela ahna BOLOH!!!

What a contest! A one horse race for a vacancy which is not even vacant! If Gonzi wants a real contest he should call an early election, but because he needs to cut some more ribbons (no, not in the national interest) he is clinging to power at all costs. Let the fools implode in themselves.
Mr Andrew Camilleri

Ma nahsibx li dawk li stennew elezzjon bikrija kienu boloh. Oh, at long last, the time regarding the acceptance of nominations for NP leadership has been cleared. At first there were confounded ideas, with different reports about the matter. For me even the Times of Malta on line report was not clear, when it stated that nominations will be accepted on Monday Feb.6.
At least there is a nine day period for accepting the nominations, which saying all, does not make that much difference. For who dare contest Lawrence Gonzi, when he is still leader and had not resigned from the post.
All we have to see on February 26, is by what percentage, Lawrence Gonzi will be confirmed leader. I do not see much trouble in that, maybe there will be some who in a secret ballot will have the guts to mark No instead of Yes.
But I do not expect it to be much, and not the amount that makes Gonzi look ridiculous to stay leader of the Nationalist Party. Let me be far fetched, if it happens that those in favour will be just 60%, certainly it is a vote of no confidence in Gonzi.
At least I expect him to be content with the 85% laid down in the PN statute, though Gonzi already showed us how much he bother about the NP statue, when he did not have the decency to make the position of NP leader vacant, just for three weeks.

That was not the way that PN apologists argued when the LP was electing a new Leader. They said that, as the person chosen could be PM one day, they had a right to express an opinion.
The same applies today, I think, don't you?

people should not concentrate about the PN leadership nomination. They should take seriously the declaration that PL will vote against the education bill. This shows PL doesn't care about our children and students. They care more about the PN leadership than our children. Shame on Joseph Muscat!
