Updated: The Civil Protection Department has urged motorists to be extra careful this evening and to avoid flood-prone areas.

It said that several localities are expected to suffer heavy rainfall and hail this evening. Wind from the north-west is also expected to reach gale force.

The MIA Met office said that the Northwest wind will be strong over the Maltese Islands, and it is expected to back West Northwest and become very strong locally reaching gale force 8 at times.

The temperature was seven degrees at 7 p.m. and is expected to hover around 5 degrees tonight.

Health Department warning

The Health Department said that in view of an expected drop in temperatures it was calling on everybody to keep warm since low temperatures could be harmful, especially for the elderly and the very young.

It said buildings should be kept warm, windows should be closed and curtains drawn.

People should ensure they have enough fuel for their heaters and they should wear extra layers as well as a hat when going outdoors.

People should also drink warm drinks and take at least one hot meal.

People who are elderly or sick should be checked.

It said symptoms of hypothermia include constant shivering, tiredness, cold and pale skin and possible even a confused state of mind, weak pulse or unconsiceousness.

people will always talk about weather and complain about it. in most cases its because people have not adapted to it. i remember my aunt who lived in Jamaica all her life when she used to visit us in june she would be shivering with "cold" and she would complain that its cold.
as for canada in summer when its 30 degrees you will be saying how hot it is but for us thats only child's play.
i enjoy all weather and my skis are prepared to do a down hill in zebbug :)

Did you actually come to Malta in the winter?? I have relatives that live in Toronto, Canada but when they visit Malta they feel much more cold than in Canada. This is because of the higher humidity there is in Malta. I've also visited Canada myself and it 's true it feels less cold at temperatures of -5C vs +5C in Malta.

Mr Soler, you are right + 5 C is not cold compared to what other countries are used to but when you consider that in Malta the temperatures do not usually get this low and that our houses and apartments do not have central heating then yes it is cold.

Try staying home and turn off your heat and then let me know what you think.

Humidity that never goes below 40%, wind 300 days a year, overcast due to humidity, no insulation, limestone walls, and no central heating produce felt temperatyures both outdoors and indoors that are probably colder than your Canadian -5C.

I have English and Russian friends who complain Malta feels colder than they ever felt back home. Russia is not a joke. My friend comes from Camchatka, whrere cold arctic winds from Siberia combined with the cold Oyashio sea current result in the peninsula being covered in snow from October to late May. Temperatures there can, and often reach, -20C. A joke compared to Toronto's -12C.

Dear Connie kerosine today is as dear as petrol. It would be complete madness to heat your house on kerosine today. Although a small gas cylinder today costs over 7 old maltese pounds( two years ago it was worth 2 pounds 50cent) it is still cheaper to run then kerosine. Yes it is difficult ,very difficult for people living on 360 euros every four weeks to heat their huse today. But then that is Europe.

I agree with you that some do not experience what cold really is, but please do remember that humidity is always high here and that increases the chill factor. I went in -10 degree areas and when the sun wasn't obscured by the clouds, I can honestly say that it felt the same like here.

And who loves winter? Nothing keeps you warm enough no matter what you wear and usually everyone is stuck inside cause of the rain. And the one thing I hate in winter is the traffic here is unbearable. PEOPLE IF YOU ARE SCARED DRIVING IN THE RAIN, DON'T DRIVE OR BUY BETTER TYRES!! Great, I feel better now :-)

It's not -36 like the North Pole, and thank God for that. I'd rather be here than shivering even harder at below zero in Central Europe.

But you obviously have not been here long enough to realise that Maltese houses are built to be cool in Summer and on the few occasions we have cold weather with large windows and no insulation they get very cold indeed. When it's wet and windy like it is now, we shiver quite hard even when it just drops below 10 degrees. But if you stay here long enough, you'll learn.

We are happy with our climate..we don't need or want sub zero temperatures. We are proud of our summers and in normal circumstances when our fellows in the north and battling ice on the road we will be enjoying our winter sun. This is just an exception so don't be bothered with our complaints about the cold.

Considering that a number of elderly people in Malta do end up in hospital suffering from hypothermia, I would not call this 'making a fuss' but rather 'raising awarness' to educate people. Perhaps those who feel that they are already savvy enough not to need information should learn that some others do need to be reminded and informed!

What nonsense.

Houses are not built for the cold in Malta.

I lived many years in Scandinavia but I never felt as cold as I do in Malta .

Now tell me MR Z S - -- have you ever lived abroad ? it doesn't sound as if you did. .

If you love severe winter you should maybe visit siberia.

On the other hand you'd maybe love to stay in Malta like many other foreigners becuase of our very temperate climate all throughout the year.

And for your info, the fuss is becuase due to our very own temperate climate, we are not used to this cold, and as such many people are unprepared for it, and/or risk taking it lightly until it is too late.

Apparentely you do not live here dear (whatever your name is)...Apart from the low temperatures we have to endure even in our homes we also have a high percent of humidity which at times reaches 90 percent(that needs to be added to the actual temperature) so the true temperature is not what the bulletin annouces but much lower than that. The final factor is that our houses are not built for these temperatures and to add insult to injury we also have a family loving Government which raises our price of gas (for our heaters and cookers) in the worst time ever...NOW!!!!! So pls have more respect next time you come to comment!

Ok telling you to phone TM. But couldn't they do it (phone) themselves as well? Thank you for not feeling you have done what you could but even put the warning for motorists and TM also here. Thank you.

What, Mr. Borg! Don't you know that Malta's favourite game is passing the buck?

Peter Murray

Feb 6th, 21:57

As usual here its everybody's responsibility and nobody's responsibility to assume responsibility. if passing the buck was an Olympic sport we would surely win our first gold medal

24 hours later and the toppled over sign in Triq is-Salina is still there!

Could it be that TM employees do not have access to internet?
