Policeman hurt in drugs investigation
A Drugs Squad police officer was injured this morning while investigating a trafficking case.
The police said officers from the Drugs Squad were conducting a raid at Marsa when the policeman who was injured approached the driver of a car.
The driver, a 25-year-old man from Valletta, drove off dragging the officer with him, slightly injuring him in the process.
He will be charged with heroin trafficking and slightly injuring a police officer.
His passengers, two men, aged 29 and 47, from Cospicua, and a 29-year-old woman from Marsa, will be charged with heroin possession and abuse.

1. Get well soon to the Police Officer.
2. Another case of drugs being the root of the problem. Any serious work being done to curb the problem? If there is, I missed it. The raids are good and nice but in all honesty, Police can NEVER solve this.

Rather a "quaint" charge "slightly injuring a Police Officer"! How about straight assault, reckless conduct, dangerous driving or, depending upon the exact circumstances, attempted murder? OK, the consequences may only have resulted in "slight" injuries to the officer but that would have been purely by good luck and not by the kind intentions of the offender. It will be interesting to see in due course what charges are libelled and the penalties if found guilty.

Exactly - In my view these weak charges point to a behind the scenes deal/ corruption which would not surprise me given the recent large number of daft sentences. When will this courts daft system/mess be cleaned up?

My sentiments entirely. Our police force, for what it is, does manage to perform adequately. I am sure that they need the backing of the public and above all the courts. S/He is the defender of the law and as such should be able to carry out his/her duty knowing that they are backed 100% by the government and the courts. A few days at home should bring you up to speed constable, well done.

Charged with slightly injuring a police officer???
Here in Malta police are taken for a joke by the same law courts! Once I was in France, and a driver was asked to go out of his car by a police ..... he hesitated to go out and was face down on his bonnet in a couple of seconds!!
Police should be given more power!!

In Malta, the police use power only against innocent and defenseless people otherwise its a whole different story where balls are played according to their own games.

How about resisting arrest, driving recklessly, not obeying instructions from a law enforcement officer.....
Were they wearing seatbelts, did they have paid up driving and car licence and insurance. We see such disregard for the law these days that we seem to be accepting too many infringements

using a car against a police officer is equivalent to using a weapon - in the states police would have unloaded their weapons however each police act is taken into perspective and we have very good policeman within my knowledge and experience. each case has to be considered and evaluated individually.

Slightly injuring a police officer? How about attempted murder? Or is dragging an officer just part of the ride?

Charged with slightly injuring a police officer??? If this happenned in the USA the outcomes would have been one of the following:
1) The driver shot at immediately by other officers and probably killed.
2) The driver dragged out of the car, taken to a cell and charged with injuring a police officer and causing serious danger to the police officer.
3) Locked up and immediately sentenced to five to ten years in a stinking prison.
The justice department in Malta should now just do one more thing: open up a kindergardten centre for drug traffickers. No really. The law should be changed and should allow police officers to shoot at once when something like this happens, and be exempted for doing so.
Attention legislators: We need some legislation which quite frankly says "No mercy with drug traffickers and bullies"

Are you sure we ought to follow the USA in these instances? I'd rather not have gun-totting criminals and police chasing each other. Totally agree with you re the light 'sentencing' which is both silly and very dangerous for the common citizen.
Back to your USA example, drug trafficking, car chases and criminals still abound, notwithstanding.

Yes Mr Brincat, although I do not fully agree with such harsh penalties, because the police are being abused too much nowadays, I suggest that the lesgilator should impose harsher (than we have) penalties on such perpetrators.
